Spanish II
Course Overview
Students will continue their study of Spanish by further expanding their knowledge of key vocabulary. This includes beginning to comprehend spoken Spanish as well as reading passages more fully.
Overall Course Objectives
The Spanish II course helps students:
- Engage in language learning.
- Review and expand the study of common vocabulary topics.
- Gain a deeper understanding of a wide range of grammar patterns.
- Participate in expanded conversations and respond appropriately to a variety of conversational
prompts.
- Communicate more meaningfully using correct vocabulary and grammatical structures.
- Read, write, speak, and listen for meaning in Spanish.
- Analyze and compare cultural practices, products, and perspectives of various Spanish-speaking
countries.
- Regularly assess progress in proficiency through quizzes, tests, and speaking/writing submissions.
Course Goals
By the end of this course students will be able to do the following:
- Ask about people, routines, and activities.
- Express likes and dislikes.
- Offer help and talk about chores.
- Talk about plans and places.
- Use indirect objects and indirect object pronouns.
- Use the present tense of the verbs dar, decir, saber, and conocer.
- Talk about where someone went and what he or she did.
- Use irregular preterites andar, venir, tener, dar, and ver.
- Describe people and things in the past.
- Order in a restaurant.
- Talk about how food tastes.
- Talk about trying on clothes
- Talk about a place and its climate
Materials Needed
-Each student should bring a notebook or binder each day to class.
-Students will need a pen or pencil.
-Students will need arts and crafts supplies (crayons, markers or coloring pencils, scissors, and glue).
-Students will need an English to Spanish dictionary (this can be purchased at Walmart).
-Students will need 5 packs of small index cards.
Grading/Evaluation Process
Grading Scale: A = 100-90; B = 89-80; C = 79-70; D = 69-60; F = Below 60
Weighting of grades:
Homework 10%
Tests, Projects, and Quizzes 40%
Daily Grade (class participation, warm-ups, writing prompts, study guides, handouts) 50%
Classroom Expectations
- Students must be on time. Being tardy 3 times equals one unexcused absence.
- All school policies apply in this class. Please refer to the SHS student handbook.
- If the student does not understand something he or she should ask questions.
- If the student is absent he or she is responsible for making up assignments.
- Students should be in their seat ready to work on the warm-up when the tardy bell rings.
- Students should stay on task and put forth their best effort.
- Students should respect the teacher, their peers, and school property.
- Cell phones and other personal electronics are to be kept turned off and out of sight.
Spanish III
Course Overview
Spanish III enhances skills learned in previous levels and provides further opportunities to increase and refine listening, speaking, reading, and writing through communicative, contextualized, meaningful, and authentic contexts. In this course students will learn to narrate, describe, and express and support opinions. Students will also work with authentic texts including historical documents, newspapers and literature while engaging in discussions on current social and political issues in the Spanish-speaking world.
